My Good Bye to Zoe

 Zoe Holderman
2000-2014
You made it to 14 1/4
which is a long time for a corgi.
And even though I had been preparing my heart
for the time you would leave us,
I still wasn't prepared to for it to happen so suddenly.
You brought us joy and taught us patience
and reminded us that we each come with personality
that can't be altered.
God created you with a personality that was bigger
 than your short little body
which didn't stop you from doing what you wanted to do.
You knew how to play and would fetch the ball until your body said enough.
You were a good sport about all the photos I took
and your fashion sense was impeccable.
 You knew how to rest
and how to make me stop and slow down.
Thanks for herding us to bed each evening
and camping by the side of my bed to herd me downstairs each morning.
I loved that ritual
and still feel bad that we didn't have any sheep for you to herd.
You would have loved that.
You loved your kingdom and surveyed it daily
to clear it from pesky squirrel, deer and crow.
We will try to continue your legacy...
A summer dip was your favorite
yet I still don't get why you hated bath time so much.
Sorry we took you to the dog park,
but thank you for always protecting us from the other dogs
and herding us back to the car safely -
it's what you lived for because we were your people.
A tennis ball was your best friend
and you were a homebody.
 You kept our feet clean
and would have done the same with our bowls if we let you.
Thanks for teaching Matteo that he needed to get up
and greet us when we get home,
even if he is sleeping.
He dutifully was there when I got home yesterday
and I was so dreading you not being there to greet me.
Girl you have enriched our lives beyond measure.
We pray you are being greeted in Paradise by your cat buddies who went ahead
- Sampson and Thomas,
and you will get
all the balls you want to chase,
endless summer swims,
longer legs,
a tail,
and all the bacon you can eat.
Little did I know this photo of you the other day would be your last.
It seemed so odd that you faced your back to me.
I know the last couple of years have been hard on you,
but you were your stoic self until the end.
This is how I will remember you -
anticipating running like the wind after your hundredth fetch
and still wanting more.

Have a woofy Thanksgiving

We spent a blessed day yesterday with family.
Zoe even got to tag along...
and play with Ella pretending to be a dog
and go on a sunny walk too.
And my first-born turned 29 the day before -
yikes this photo seems like yesterday.
 And advent starts this Sunday
so I drew a backdrop and set up the stable
at church.
Hope you each had a nice Thanksgiving
and the countdown to Christmas begins!

tomato hunt

She is enjoying fresh picked tomatoes
warm from the summer sun
just as much as we are.
Who can blame her?

the week in instagram

some random instagram pictures...
I drove by artEAST and discovered my crow painting in the window,
and we celebrated our 33rd anniversary
with some of this,
which led to buying a juicer and making some of this - yum.
and Zoe enjoyed an Easter ride
and some quiet time washing my foot.
Hope your week was extra special
and if not there is always next week. ;)

i spy with my little eye

i spy with my little eye...
hmmm, could that be the sun making an appearance this morning?
and with that sentiment in mind -
It is never too late to be what you might have been.
George  Eliot

i will sharply reprimand the sun and give him that encouragement to show up here more often.
but the same could be said of me and showing up in the studio.
 so in that spirit,
you can now find me most of these summer days painting away at my art desk
as i have finally given up
(or stuffed)
my fear
and i will be having my own booth
at the Sammamish Art Fair in October.
 the tools are ready
the painting, including the joys and the frustrations have begun.
i have started 30,
yep you heard me right,
30 paintings.
yikes
i spy with my little eye -
30 boards and canvases perched around the room
and a happy little dog at my feet.
i promise to share the process here my friends.
happy painting to you this fine summer day
and please mr. sun,
i would like you to stay, just for a little while.

'tis the season

Zoe finally got all 30+ stitches out,
the cone of shame off,
and promptly disguised herself as a bunny
so we would not recognize her.
Matteo joined in the fun
and quickly realized it was a mistake.
Any easter bunnies hopping your way?

just me & she

the sun is out and i am happy...
she is not...
the cone of shame is hard to explain to a dog
so i will try to find a kong neck collar today
to make life easier for the next 10 days...
sigh.
in the sun - did i mention?

happy heart day

 Have a great heart day!
We had fun making these;
well I can't say Zoe did...
not easy making your dog look at the camera
while you are hugging her too.
Oh well she survived.
